Rolls-Royce announced today that US Airways has chosen Trent 700 engines to power up to 30 Airbus A330-200 twinjets. The value of the new business is approximately $2 billion and includes two long-term TotalCare® services agreements for the Trent 700 and RB211 engine fleets. The A330 order comprises engines for 15 firm and up to 15 additional aircraft.

This is the latest in a series of engine orders placed by US Airways since mid-2007. In June the airline announced firm orders for 22 Airbus A350 XWB aircraft powered by Trent XWB engines with a value of approximately $1.8 billion, including a TotalCare agreement.

In December, the airline selected the V2500 engine to power up to 153 Airbus A320 family aircraft. Rolls-Royce is a leading shareholder of International Aero Engines, the manufacturer of V2500 engines, and its share of the V2500 order is approximately $400 million.

The Trent 700 delivers outstanding levels of performance and the highest available thrust on the A330, resulting in increased operational flexibility. Latest technologies fed into the engine as a performance improvement package have delivered better fuel burn, which translates into lower emissions.

The airline currently operates a fleet of 43 Boeing 757s equipped with RB211-535 engines and 94 A320 family aircraft powered by V2500 engines.

US Airways is the 52nd customer or operator to select the Trent 700 for the A330 and will take delivery of its first Trent-powered A330 in 2009.

This order is contingent upon execution of definitive agreements, which are expected in the coming months.

The Trent 700 is the first engine in the successful Trent family, entering service in 1995. It is the most powerful engine for the A330, with a maximum in-service thrust of 72,000lb. It is also the quietest and cleanest option for the A330, with the greatest margin to CAEP 4 legislation.

The Trent 700 has achieved a market-leading position on the A330, securing 53 per cent of orders, winning 70 per cent of A330 engine business placed in the last five years. In engine competitions for follow-on A330 orders made by existing Trent 700 customers, the engine has an unprecedented 100 per cent success record. To date, 11 customers have placed additional orders for the Trent 700 following an initial fleet purchase.

In the next three years, approximately 60 per cent of A330 deliveries will be Trent 700-powered, and the number of Trent 700 engines delivered will be equivalent to 80 per cent of the entire number delivered to date.

The Trent 700 has a 100 per cent record in the rapidly-expanding Chinese market, having been selected on all 137 of the country’s A330s.

Trent 700s have logged eight and a half million flying hours and almost two and a half million flights on 214 A330s. A further 233 Trent-powered A330s on firm order have yet to be delivered, plus 37 options.

Rolls-Royce continues to invest in core technologies, products, people and capabilities with the objective of broadening and strengthening the product portfolio, improving efficiency and enhancing the environmental performance of its products. These investments create high barriers to entry.

Research and development is carried out in facilities in the UK, Germany, the U.S., Italy, Singapore, Japan and Scandinavia, with particularly strong relationships with the 29 universities where there are Rolls-Royce University Technology Centres.

Annual sales were £7.4 billion in 2007, of which 55 per cent came from services revenues. The firm and announced order book is £45.9 billion, of which aftermarket services represent 30 percent, providing visibility of future levels of activity.

TotalCare, tailored for individual operators, offers a range of services from Rolls-Royce covering all aspects of asset management in support of its Civil Aerospace products. Building on the company’s knowledge, experience and infrastructure, these services include elements such as predictive maintenance, logistics management, and global repair and overhaul offerings. TotalCare can remove uncertainties from engine management and improve operational reliability for operators through a mutually aligned business relationship.
