Alcatel-Lucent and KELAG to test an end-to-end smart metering solution for efficient energy measurement in Austria

Vienna, Austria  and Metering Europe, Barcelona, Spain, October 6, 2009 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced it has started a pilot project with KELAG Netz GmbH, an Austrian power and gas supplier and energy network operator based in Carinthia, for the deployment and integration of a smart metering infrastructure.

In the pilot, Alcatel-Lucent will start providing its smart metering solution for up to 550 homes. This project is one of the first end-to-end pilots including Operational Support Systems (OSS)/Business Support System (BSS) for smart metering in Austria. It will also help KELAG Netz GmbH to educate and financially incent consumers to be more aware of their energy usage.

The smart metering solution provided by Alcatel-Lucent, together with the components supplied by its partners, offer an easy to use, end-to-end system to record energy consumption in an automated and accurate way. The service spectrum of the solution ranges from the supply of the Meter Data Management solution (MDM) through a software-based prepayment functionality to an Operational Support System (OSS) for alarm management, inventory and ticketing.

Meter Data Management must protect the legacy IT infra-structure, processing the incoming real-time metering data and adapting it to the requirements of the legacy IT infrastructure. MDM must protect the existing IT infrastructure while at the same time allowing a gradual transformation of the utility business processes to smart grid.”
