Taipei, April 21, 2008 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) and Tatung University today announced the launch of Taiwan’s first WiMAX 16e campus network to foster research and innovations in wireless broadband technologies. The University’s Center of WiMAX Wireless Broadband Technology features Alcatel-Lucent’s advanced, world-leading WiMAX solutions. Tatung University’s community of professors and students (more than 4000 people) can utilize the new WiMAX 16e network to delve deeper into wireless technology research, while WiMAX developers can also benefit from Tatung University’s research outcome for compatible hardware and innovative software. Alcatel-Lucent today signed a memorandum of cooperation with Tatung University to strengthen the telecommunication research and development of innovative WiMAX application by coordinating resources from both parties, marking it an important milestone in the WiMAX industry in Taiwan. Tatung University’s WiMAX 16e experimental network is supported by the Tatung InfoComm, a WiMAX operator in Taiwan with the aim of building innovative, professional and trustworthy WiMAX products. Leveraging on WiMAX’s advantages of high bandwidth, large capacity, and low latencies, Tatung University’s experimental network provides “ubiquitous,” “always-on” service from base stations, indoor and outdoor CPEs, PCMCIA/Express cards, USB dongles to laptops with built-in WiMAX capabilities and other devices. In the future, user behaviour information and usage data will be analyzed and available to WiMAX developers to further improve and develop newer and appealing WiMAX services. Tatung University and Alcatel-Lucent are also demonstrating WiMAX technology’s maturity through various innovative, state-of-the-art WiMAX application services, including smart metering, digital video surveillance systems, IPTV, PS3 gaming , IMS, and high-speed video streaming. These innovative applications show that WiMAX technology can make every day life more convenient and hassle-free. “Before deploying WiMAX application services in the commercial market, field testing and evaluation are crucial. Tatung University’s network not only proves WiMAX’s capabilities in real life but also provides a wealth of data as well as an R&D environment for WiMAX developers and research institutes,” said C.Y. Hsu, the leader of Tatung University’s Wireless Broadband Laboratory. “The WiMAX industry will no doubt continue to broaden its presence in our daily lives to meet people’s needs.” Alcatel-Lucent is a leading player in the wireless infrastructure market and the commercial leader in WiMAX Rev-e, with 14 networks in service out of its 35 commercial references worldwide. “We are honoured to be able to participate in the Tatung University’s WiMAX project. This project further attests WiMAX technology’s potential in the development of application services and Alcatel-Lucent’s sustained leading role in WiMAX” said Larry Chai, Alcatel-Lucent Taiwan president. “We shall continue to cooperate with Tatung University to develop innovative next-generation wireless broadband application services.” Other WiMAX partners participating in today’s press conference are Accton Wireless Broadband Corp., ASUSTeK Computer Inc., China Television Co., dmedia System Co., D-Link Corporation, Gemtek Technology Co., the Institute of Information Industry, Intel Taiwan, Polycom Asia Pacific PTE Ltd., MOXA Technologies, Quanta Microsystems Inc., Tatung Company, VIA Technologies Inc., World-Tech Technology, and ZyXEL Communications Corp. .
