New substations and systems to secure reliable power for metal processors

Zurich, Switzerland, Nov. 3, 2008 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won a $34-million order from Azerbaijan’s state power utility, AzerEnerji, to supply turnkey substations and power systems that will ensure reliable power for the metal industry in Gyandja City in the northwest of the country.

ABB will deliver air- and gas-insulated substations and two units of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), as well as breakers, instrument transformers and surge arresters, and a MicroSCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system that will monitor and control the substations.

“ABB recently completed a substation delivery for AzerEnerji, and we are pleased to have been entrusted with another order,” said Peter Leupp, head of ABB’s Power Systems division. “Our technologies will help to support the expansion of local metals production by ensuring a reliable supply of power.”

The order was booked in June this year, and deliveries are scheduled to begin in late 2008. ABB will be responsible for installation and the commissioning, which is planned for April 2009.

Azerbaijan has enjoyed strong economic growth in recent years as a result of its significant oil and gas reserves. With this growth has come rising demand for electricity, in both residential and commercial sectors.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 120,000 people.
