CeBIT 2004: Nokia adds new chapters to story of mobility

Industry leader unveils company's first mega-pixel camera phone, complementary imaging enhancements, products, solutions. and a world's first in mobile games

At the CeBIT 2004 trade show Nokia unveiled an array of products and solutions which further illustrate the evolution of mobility and the company's vision of "Life goes Mobile". Among the new products announced was the Nokia 7610 smartphone, Nokia's first mega-pixel imaging device which offers convenient image capture, printing, storing and sending. Nokia unveiled a number of complementary imaging enhancements like the Nokia Image Album and Nokia Image Viewer, a new advanced car kit, as well as integrated RFID for a GSM phone.  In addtion, Nokia launched Pocket Kingdom: Own the World, the world's first global massively multiplayer online mobile game, only on the N-Gage platform.

The Nokia exhibition space at CeBIT 2004 offers visitors the opportunity to experience a broad range of mobile devices, enhancements and applications such as imaging, music, mobile content as well as enterprise-related products and services.   In addition, consumer electronics-enthusiasts will also witness demonstrations of the latest mobile technologies including EDGE, Push to talk, WCDMA, streaming, among others.

"The 'mobility industry' is not just about mobile phones or infrastructure anymore - it has become an integral part of the converged digital industry. Consumer electronics, communications, IT and media industries are all transforming, and Nokia is in a key position to drive the transformation with compelling products and superior technological understanding," said Juha Putkiranta, Nokia's Senior Vice President, Imaging Business Unit.  "CeBIT 2004 showcases Nokia's industry and technological leadership in providing innovative products and solutions that demonstrate the multiple opportunities of digital convergence."

From Voice to Visual Communications

Nokia continues to broaden mobility from voice to visual communications with a growing portfolio of imaging devices and driving the global adoption of a mobile imaging business system.  The Nokia 7610 smart phone announced is the company's first mega-pixel (1152 X 864) imaging device.  Featuring a high-quality lens, 4x digital zoom, and a self-timer, the Nokia 7610 camera phone also offers offers rich Multimedia Messaging, email, and Internet browser, 72MB of expandable memory, USB, Bluetooth connectivity and support for Java technology.

The Nokia Image Album, announced today, has a 20 GB hard disk drive to store digital images, video clips and messages which can be viewed, shared, organized and edited on a TV screen using a remote control.  Also featuring a remote control, the portable Nokia Image Viewer SU-5 can show and share images on a TV screen or video projector at home or in the office.

World's first global massively multiplayer online mobile game

Nokia, together with Sega, today announced Pocket Kingdom: Own The World for the N-Gage game deck. Pocket Kingdom: Own The World is the world's first global massively multiplayer online mobile game, challenging gamers to build a mighty online empire while competing against thousands of challengers from around the world. At the N-Gage exhibition area, visitors can play the latest N-Gage games and experience the N-Gage Arena - the ultimate mobile gaming community.

The Nokia booth will also host several Forum Nokia developers. The Forum Nokia demonstration area will display the latest innovative mobile software applications and services for entertainment, enterprise and productivity solutions, including mobile interactive TV, mobile navigator, 3D weather forecasts, photo blogger applications, and multi-player games.  Forum Nokia is the largest mobile application developer community in the world with more than 1.35 million registered developers.

Touch & Go... and drive

CeBIT2004 also saw the introduction of the Nokia Mobile RFID Kit. Combined with the Nokia 5140 phone, the Nokia Mobile RFID Kit is the first GSM phone integrated product offering with RFID reading capability. The Nokia Mobile RFID Kit extends the mobility of field force personnel by integrating RFID reader technology to a familiar portable device. Simply by touching a smart object, the user can initiate tasks in their Nokia phone - call and send text messages or access databases and record new data entries.

In-car communications becomes more flexible with the Advanced Car Kit CK-7W from Nokia. Using either Bluetooth technology or a Pop-Port connection, users have greater connectivity options and can use different mobile phones.  Nokia also introduced another handsfree solution, the Nokia Headrest Handsfree BHF-3, which can be mounted on the headrest bars of a car's front seat.
